QuantumScape Patents – Key Insights and Stats

QuantumScape has a total of 288 patents globally, out of which 103 have been granted. Of these 288 patents, more than 62% patents are active. United States of America is where QuantumScape has filed the maximum number of patents, followed by Europe and China. Parallelly, United States of America seems to be the main focused R&D center and is also the origin country of QuantumScape.

QuantumScape was founded in the year 2010 by Jagdeep Singh, Tim Holme and Fritz Prinz. Company is doing business in researching about solid state lithium metal batteries for electric cars. As of December 2021, QuantumScape has a market cap of $9.99 Billion.

Quantumscape’s key selling point is its work on rechargeable solid-state lithium anode batteries. These batteries have the potential to enhance EV range by up to 50%, cut charging times to under 15 minutes, and make EVs safer by removing the use of flammable liquids.

A solid-state lithium-metal battery is one that uses a solid-state separator instead of the polymer separator found in traditional lithium-ion batteries. The carbon or silicon anode used in traditional lithium-ion batteries can be changed with a lithium-metal anode when the separator is replaced. The lithium metal anode has a higher energy density than traditional anodes, allowing the battery to store more energy in the same amount of space. Some solid-state designs employ extra lithium to produce the anode, but the QuantumScape concept is ‘anode-free,’ meaning the battery is manufactured without an anode in a drained state and the anode forms in situ on the first charge.

As a result, solid-state lithium-metal battery technology has the potential to increase cell energy density (by eliminating the carbon or carbon-silicon anode), reduce charge time (by eliminating the charge bottleneck caused by the need for lithium to diffuse into the carbon particles in conventional lithium-ion cells), and extend life (by eliminating capacity fade caused by the unwanted chemical side reaction between the carbon and the liquid electrolyte in conventional lithium-ion cells) (by eliminating the anode materials and manufacturing costs).
