Although additive manufacturing, often known as 3D printing, originated in the plastics and metals industries, technology is increasingly being employed in the food business. The 3D food printing sector is expected to reach $525.6 million by 2023.  While still in its infancy, 3D food printing has enormous potential to transform the food industry: the possibilities are endless, from improving nutritional properties to creating food for those with dietary restrictions, to customising gastronomic experiences, to feeding the hungry. However, no discussion of food would be complete without including chocolate, right? Here comes Hershey.

CocoJet, a chocolate 3D printer, was developed in collaboration between The Hershey Company and 3D Systems, one of the top manufacturers of 3D printing equipment. The CocoJet printer is meant to print milk, dark, and white chocolates in a user-defined design supplied into it through Computer-aided design (CAD) file or scanning technology. The CocoJet can “print chocolates in numerous forms, sizes, and geometries” in addition to personalising current Hershey items. Hershey started this adventure into 3D food printing to allow customers to customise their products. As a result, the CocoJet made its debut in December 2014.
