In the past 20 years, IBM’s patents were cited by USPTO examiners approx 83,914 times to block patent applications of 6957 assignees.

The companies facing these rejections include tech giants like Google, Microsoft, and Intel to niche players like RedHat, and Oracle.

For the analysis, we used 35 U.S.C. 102 and 35 U.S.C. 103 rejections by the USPTO that cited IBM’s patent as a prior art reference. This analysis is sourced from our tool BOS, a tool designed for IP monetization teams to find licensing opportunities.

BOS provides a central repository of companies’ patents/pending applications that have prevented others from receiving a grant. In-house patent monetization teams and patent brokerages can use BOS to devise non-aggressive patent monetization strategies.
