American Express has evolved into a data-driven culture and a leader in the financial services industry’s use of data and analytics. Amex is leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) to improve what it does best: ensuring secure transactions and providing outstanding customer service.

American Express is using deep-learning-based models optimised with NVIDIA TensorRT and running on NVIDIA Triton Inference Server to better identify and reduce credit card fraud. These technologies can discover and highlight irregularities in tens of millions of daily transactions in real time using recurrent neural networks (RNNs) supplemented with long short-term memory networks (LSTMs).

American Express was able to not only meet its two-millisecond latency requirement, but also achieve a 50x improvement over CPU-based solutions, thanks to its upgraded, real-time fraud detection technology. Furthermore, the GPU-accelerated LSTM deep neural network, when combined with its long-standing gradient boosting machine (GBM) model (used for regression and classification), enhanced fraud detection accuracy by up to 6% in certain areas. Amex’s newest machine learning model for fraud detection, Gen X, has been in the works for years. It’s possible that it’s the world’s largest commercial machine learning model.

American Express used AI and machine learning (ML) to automate the document evaluation for commercial credit onboarding, allowing the insurer to focus on working with the customer. Overall, Amex’s usage of machine learning has resulted in a 20% to 30% improvement in its risk models, as well as a 20% to 30% reduction in cycle time.

Amex is currently developing a new app-based, contextual, and predictive search feature. The tool, which is based on an NLP model originally developed for the company’s customer service chatbots, would “understand” various circumstances and, if all goes well, predict what customers require before they even input anything.
