Refineries are facing a new hurdle in selling heavy crude oil, one of the by-products of crude oil refining. Until 2020, this black, thick oil was commonly used as a maritime fuel. Its use has been severely limited as a result of a recent International Maritime Organization (IMO) agreement. The reason behind this was that when heavy oil is burned in a ship’s engine, it produces a lot of sulphur oxide and nitrogen oxide.
Linde Engineering has developed a partial oxidation process method that allows oil companies to keep utilising this waste product.
