“We are focused on being consumer-centric and leading the industry in insight generation and leveraging data” – Claudia Schubert, Diageo president U.S. spirits and Canada

Diageo has an electronically tagged bottle of Johnnie Walker Blue Label whisky, which will not only enhance consumers’ enjoyment of the top-shelf Scotch, but will also allow for supply-chain tracking. The bottle, which was developed in collaboration with Thinfilm, incorporates near field communication (NFC) technology into the labelling to allow consumers to interact with the package using NFC-enabled smartphones.

Each bottle is equipped with a small, flexible NFC tag that allows customers to access product and brand information by just tapping their phone on the bottle’s back label. Thinfilm’s OpenSense technology is used to create the tags, which are put to the bottles in such a way that they tear if the bottle’s seal is broken.
