“Indian startup builds world’s largest 3D-printed rocket engine, secures US patent.”
That was the headline that lit up India’s innovation landscape earlier this year. The company? Agnikul Cosmos, a deep-tech startup born at IIT Madras, now filing patents that make headlines not just in India, but globally. It’s one of many signs that India’s role in global innovation has fundamentally changed.
Between 2020 and 2025, Indian inventors have gone from playing catch-up to setting the pace. In FY 2023–24 alone, India recorded nearly 92,000 patent filings, with Indian applicants contributing over 51,500, a clear signal that innovation is increasingly “made in India, filed in India.”
Recent policy shifts such as the Patents (Amendment) Rules, 2024 have made it easier for inventors to secure IP faster. Meanwhile, India has steadily climbed the Global Innovation Index, moving from 48th in 2020 to 38th in 2025, fueled by stronger academia–industry partnerships, state-backed R&D programs and a booming startup culture.
Even tech giants like Jio are getting in on the action, filing over 1,250 patents in FY 2023–24 in areas such as 5G/6G, AI and connected devices. Public institutions like CSIR and IIT Madras continue to feature among the top PCT filers, signaling a healthy pipeline of innovation from research labs to real-world deployment.
